About the Program

AED 474/574 is an advanced Topics course, with specific content varying according to current research in the field of art education. However, there are specific goals we hit each spring:

  • To practice the procedures and methodologies to energize and support their future art programs by authentically integrating the art curriculum with a community service, outside of formal k-12 institutions.  This includes practice and application of:

    • negotiation, collaboration, technological, organizational, leadership, persuasive argumentation, formal and informal presentation, art teaching, business and research skills, among themselves, with a community partner, and the greater community.

    • problem-finding, as well as problem-solving skills

    • focused on a local community need.

  • To engage in critical reflection on all aspects of their project

  • To learn how to use technology and social media better to promote learning and/or promote the project

  • To provide opportunities for the art education students to create professional materials to support their future careers within formal K-12 and community educational institutions.

  • To consider, research, debate and ponder issues of relevancy, engagement, and professional ethics in art education

  • To highlight and draw attention to the importance of the ceramics offerings at the University of Maine

  • To highlight and draw attention to a community need or problem.

  • To learn and practice graduate level research skills and project development.

 

 

 

Hannah Bailey

Hannah is in her third year at the University of Maine working to complete her degree in Art Education. Art has always been a big part of her life and she hopes to be able to share that passion with her future students. Hannah is from Belfast, Maine where art is celebrated greatly which inspired and encouraged her to pursue her passion. Although Maine will always be important to her, after graduation she hopes to travel outside of Maine and teach at the Middle School level.

Marie Gardner

Maire Gardner is a 3rd year Art Education major at the University of Maine, she is from Carmel Maine. She enjoys painting, drawing, and has a budding interest in ceramics. A lot of her paintings include nature scenes, she is an avid hiker and visits Acadia National Park frequently. Her current interests include exploring color in new and exciting ways, playing around with abstract painting incorporating geometric designs inspired by kaleidoscopes. Her goal after graduation is to travel and teach in other areas of the United Sates and gain valuable life experience doing so.

Amy Sutherland

Amy Sutherland is a student at the University of Maine who is pursuing a double major in Art Education and Studio Art. In her life she has always been interested in the relation between technology and art and her primary studio interest is Digital Art. In college she has explored various Digital Art subjects including Video Editing, Photography, Digital Drawing, and Animation in her studies at the University of Maine. Throughout these various subjects she is has been by narratives that can be created in art. A single a photograph can tell a by various colors, shades, and composition of the overall piece. In addition to its subject matter Amy expects going to be graduate with a BA degree in Studio Art and Art Education with Graphic Design and Art History Minor in 2017.

Laura Lyons

Laura Lyons is currently in her fourth year as an art education student at the University of Maine. She grew up in Ellsworth, Maine as the youngest of four children. Being a part of such a creative family encouraged her to pursue her love of drawing and painting. After spending two summers as an arts and crafts camp counselor, Laura realized that she enjoyed working with children and being able to facilitate a positive environment for others to create art in. After taking several studio art classes at UMaine, she has become interested in working with various media including ceramics, printmaking, and wood-burning. Laura looks forward to one day having her own classroom where she can have the opportunity to inspire others to explore their creativity
