    • focused on a local community need.

  • To engage in critical reflection on all aspects of their project

  • To learn how to use technology and social media better to promote learning and/or promote the project

  • To provide opportunities for the art education students to create professional materials to support their future careers within formal K-12 and community educational institutions.

  • To consider, research, debate and ponder issues of relevancy, engagement, and professional ethics in art education

About the Program

2019's Project: Art and Community Wellness (Wabanaki Health and Wellness Center)

Mission:

The University of Maine Art Education Community Outreach (UMAECO 2019), strives to elicit global change through local action and awareness. These students aim to achieve this by creating opportunities for collaborative art engagement and facilitating diverse cultural storytelling with community partners.

Vision:

The students of the UMAECO class of 2019 have decided to pursue collaborative arts projects through working with the Wabanaki Health and Wellness Center. We would like to facilitate the sharing and exploration of participants personal experiences through short stories and poems prompted by the themes of hope, home, and metamorphosis. Participants will then have the opportunity to respond visually to their own writings. Our intention is to collect the work that they create and present it to them in book form.

In order to do this we will be researching the benefits of storytelling. We will be exploring different ways to facilitate this among diverse populations by working with individuals to create artwork, documenting their stories, and presenting their experiences in multiple formats.

We hope that you will follow us on our journey!

Calla Balboni

Calla Balboni is in her final year at the University of Maine. She is from Oakland, Maine and hopes to gain further experience outside of her home state. With a focus in ceramics during high school the idea of pursuing a career in the field of art education seemed like the right fit.

Tehya Boucher

Tehya Boucher is in her final year at the University of Maine. After switching majors a few times she landed in the Art Education program and never looked back! Growing up in Vermont she has always had a love for nature and our responsibility towards it, which shows a lot in her work as a sculptor. She is always seeking out new projects and new ways of making art and inspiring the people around her to do the same. She also has a Maine Coon cat named Mittsey who is super adorable.

Primarily working with graphite pencils and paint, Jasmine enjoys exploring many different styles of mark making, with her favorite being a mix of expressionism, surrealism, and abstract. She hopes to work with a wide range of students, from Kindergarten to high school level, as she loves all that each of the age groups has to offer in terms of art and personality. Inspired by her own high school art teacher, Jasmine wants to encourage students of all abilities and interests to find their own unique love of art making.

Megan Maltby

Megan Maltby is junior at the University of Maine in the Art Education Program. She is from Chatham, New Jersey right outside of New York City. Her hope is to eventually move back down to New Jersey and teach art for K-8 students. Her love of art stems from the many artists in her family that taught her all she knows. Her hope is to inspire children through art and to help them find their own voice and personality in the process.
